  • Space Oddity, by David Bowie It is said that Bowie wrote this song after watching the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie '2001: A Space Odyssey' (see gallery of best space-related movies). The sad lyrics tell the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who cuts off communication with Earth and floats into space. The character was featured in other songs by Bowie and in the hit 'Major Tom', by German singer Peter Schilling, which is also on this list.   • Eclipse by Pink Floyd From the 'Dark Side of the Moon' album. In this song Roger Walters examines the human condition using a space metaphor.   • Major Tom by Peter Schilling The 1983 song was first recorded in German but became an international hit after its English version. It tells the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut created by David Bowie and who was featured in songs such as 'Space Oddity'. Space-related lyrics: '4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us drifting, falling.   • Space Truckin', by Deep Purple This 1972 song by the British rock band talks about traveling to Mars and Venus and rocking in the solar system.   • 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack - The Blue Danube, by Johann Strauss II This waltz composed in 1866 has become the tune for objects flying in orbit. In Stanley Kubrick's movie (see our best space-related gallery), it is used to accompany a scene in which a spacecraft docks with a space station. The use of the song is said to be intended to create a parallel between the docking procedure and the role of two dancers in a waltz.
  • Hit 'em High (the Monstar's Anthem), by B-Real, Coolio, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Method Man This rap beat made the list because it was the soundtrack of the outer-space creatures who take control over the bodies and talent of star NBA players in 'Space Jam'. Space-related lyrics: 'Loungin' in the mothership back around my way (Uhh!) I'm 28 light years old If the refs get political, dribble like Bob Dole'
  • Calling occupants of interplanetary craft, by the Carpenters The anthem of World Contact Day was originally released in 1976 by the band Klaatu, but gained notoriety when The Carpenters covered the song. The track includes metallic voices that mimic extraterrestrial creatures. Space-related lyrics: 'Calling occupants of interplanetary most extraordinary craft You’ve been observing our earth And we’d like to make a contact with you We are your friends'
  • Walking on the moon, by The Police The song released in 1979 started as joke lyrics written in a hotel in Munich and its original title was 'Walking round the room'. If you change the parts that say 'walking on the moon' to its original title, the song loses its entire space theme. Space-related lyrics: 'Walking back from your house Walking on the moon Walking back from your house Walking on the moon Feet they hardly touch the ground Walking on the moon My feet don't hardly make no sound Walking on, walking on the moon'
  • Mr. Spaceman, by The Byrds Upon the release of this single in 1966, the music press came up with the term 'space rock' to describe it. Rumor has it the band members hoped the song would help them communicate with extraterrestrials. Space-related lyrics: 'Must be those strangers that come every night Those saucer shaped lights put people uptight Leave blue-green footprints that glow in the dark I hope they get home all right'
